  1. ASSESSMENT DETAILS

INTRODUCTION

This unit provides opportunities to develop skills in decision making, problem solving and communication integrated with the skills and knowledge developed in many of the other units within the programme to complete a realistic project. It requires the learner to select, plan, implement and evaluate a project and finally present the outcomes, in terms of the process and the product of the project. It also allows learners to develop the ability to work individually and/or with others, within a defined timescale and given constraints, to produce an acceptable and viable solution to an agreed brief.

If this is a group project, each member of the team must be clear about their responsibilities at the start of the project and supervisors must ensure that everyone is accountable for each aspect of the work and makes a contribution to the end result. Learners must work under the supervision of programme tutors or work-based managers.

Aim:

To develop learners’ skills of independent enquiry by undertaking a sustained investigation of direct relevance to their vocational, academic and professional development.

Key Objectives:

  1. Be able to formulate a project
  2. Be able to implement the project within agreed procedures and to specification

Teaching and Learning Activities

The module tutor(s) will aim to combine lectures with tutorial activities. This environment will provide opportunities for the student to understand the course material through case study and text and to apply it in a practical way. The intent is to facilitate interactive class activities, and discussion about the significant role of research in a global and local business environment.

2.3       Teaching Ethos

The college’s approach towards teaching and learning is simple and effective. The main aim of UKCBC is to assist learners in maximising their potential by ensuring that they are taught clearly and effectively. This will enable students to engage in the learning environment and promote success in both their academic studies and subsequent career.

2.3.1 Methods of Delivery:

LECTURES:

These will be developed around the key concepts as mentioned in the indicative course content and will use a range of live examples and cases from business practice to demonstrate the application of theoretical concepts. This method is primarily used to identify and explain key aspects of the subject so that learners can utilise their private study time more effectively.

SEMINARS:

These are in addition to the lectures. The seminars are designed to give learners the opportunity to test their understanding of the material covered in the lectures and private study with the help of reference books. This methodology usually carries a set of questions identified in advance. Seminars are interactive sessions led by the learners. This method of study gives the learner an excellent opportunity to clarify any points of difficulty with the tutor and simultaneously develop their oral communication skills.

 CASE STUDIES:

An important learning methodology is the extensive use of case studies. They enable learners to apply the concepts that they learn in their subjects. The learners have to study the case, analyse the facts presented and arrive at conclusions and recommendations. This assists in the assessment of the learner’s ability to apply to the real world the tools and techniques of analysis which they have learnt. The case study serves as a supplement to the theoretical knowledge imparted through the course work.

Plagiarism:

Any act of plagiarism will be seriously dealt with according to the colleges and awarding bodies’ regulations. In this context the definition and scope of plagiarism are presented below:

Plagiarism is presenting someone’s work as your won. It includes copying information directly from the web or books without referencing the material; submitting joint coursework as an individual effort; copying another student’s coursework; stealing coursework form another student and submitting it as your own work.Suspected plagiarism will be investigated and if found to have occurred will be dealt with according to the college procedure.  ASSIGNMENT

Case Study: Executive Cars Ltd

Executive Cars Ltd used to be a local company that provides car rental services based in the East Sussex countryside.  After inheriting the business eight years ago, John Wilberforce decided to re-engineer the business process and establish an Executive Car Limited company.

Business has grown steadily over the past eight years.  In the early years, the cars were hired primarily for private use; however, the company in the last two years has catered to a variety of clientele, including organisations, executives, and members of the public.

The Executive Cars growing popularity has led to their expansion. They have purchased a fleet of cars and the business is now a limited company.  They have now employed additional personnel to manage HR, finance, advertising/booking and have built a large office complex with a two storey car park.

Currently, all records are manually kept.  This manual record keeping system has caused many problems for Executive Cars.   For instance, just last week the company had two families booked to use the “luxurious Limousine” for a wedding on the same date.  Luckily, one of the families was convinced to use the normal Limousine at a discounted rate. To avoid upsetting valuable customers; Executive Cars Ltd. requires you to develop a database system which will allow it to better manage and maintain its fleet of company cars.  Each department in the company is given a quota of pool-cars to be used by any authorised employees within that department.  The employees regularly use these as they carry out their day to day business.

The mileage of each vehicle at the start and end of each journey must be recorded in the system.  The destination, employee number and departure date must all be recorded before each trip is authorised to ensure that each department does not overbook its pool of cars.

To keep their fleet of cars in peak condition they are regularly serviced by one of the external garages which Executive Cars Ltd., have on their recommended list.  For each service visit their database system is required to record the name of the garage, the labour time, labour cost, parts used and the cost of each part.  Some parts are major components, or are sub-parts of a major component. The company must be able to determine which parts belong to a particular major component.  They therefore maintain their own record of car parts and the information of sub-part which go to make up a major part.

You are asked to evaluate, design and develop an Information Systems considering the following requirements:

v  The Information systems will allow Executive Cars Ltd:

v  To better manage and maintain its fleet of company cars

v  To record the mileage of each vehicle at the start and end of each journey

v  To record the destination, employee number and departure date before each trip is authorised to ensure that each department does not overbook its pool of cars

v  To record the name of the garage, the labour time, labour cost, parts used and the cost of each part for each service visit

v  To maintain their own record of car parts and the information of sub-part which go to make up a major part
